What is a Postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula will help families after the birth and/or bringing home of a new baby. The role of the Postpartum Doula is to offer guidance around infant feeding and care, provide emotional and physical support in regards to recovery from childbirth, help with infant soothing, and be a sounding board for new parents.

A Postpartum Doula will also help with light housework, fix meals, and offer to incorporate older children into the new experience. This role is about encouraging new parents, caring for them by ensuring they rest and are fed, and helping the whole family adjust to life with a newborn.

In short, I will be there to care for the baby but also for the mother/birthing person and partners. I will anticipate the needs of the family to help you have a smooth and stress-free transition into parenthood.

What happens during a daytime visit?

During daytime visits, I will check in with you about how the night went, ask how you’re feeling (physically and emotionally), and start by addressing any immediate concerns. If you’re having any challenges with feeding, often that is addressed first. We can then make a plan together for how I can best support you during the visit. Often that looks like me holding the baby while you shower or helping prepare food while you breastfeed.

What happens during an overnight visit?

On your first time home with your newborn, I will stay with the baby and give bottle feedings or bring the baby to you to nurse. I will change diapers/clothing/bedding as needed and can help prepare breakfast for parents before leaving in the morning. I will help mom in and out of bed to use the bathroom, bring hot and cold packs, or support with any other care needs.
